The Indy Arts Council has recently funded 16 public art projects, allocating over $140,000 to artists and nonprofit groups. Lorance, and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, with individual grants ranging from $5,245 to $10,000. Music Festivals
Chreece, Indianapolis’ DIY hip-hop festival, is making history by featuring its first women headliners in its 11th year. Scheduled for August 29, the festival will showcase over 70 local and national artists across eight venues. A new addition this year is “The People’s Village,” a free, all-ages public area offering live performances, vendors, and family-friendly programming. Founded in 2015, Chreece continues to be a significant celebration of the city’s rap culture, rooted in community and accessibility.
Art Exhibitions and Cultural Events
The Harrison Center remains a cornerstone of Indianapolis’ art scene, hosting over 72 exhibitions annually in eight unique galleries. With more than 40 studio artists, the center showcases a diverse range of talents, offering monthly gallery openings and community events that foster appreciation for the arts.
Additionally, the city’s First Friday events provide monthly opportunities to explore local art. Galleries, studios, and culturally-oriented businesses open their doors to the public, featuring new exhibitions and interactive experiences. ArtMix, in collaboration with the Harrison Center, participates in these celebrations, offering art events in their studios and showcasing featured artists.
Annual Festivals
Indianapolis hosts several annual festivals that highlight its rich cultural tapestry. The Penrod Arts Fair, known as “Indiana’s Nicest Day,” is one of the largest single-day arts fairs in the U.S., drawing over 20,000 attendees. Organized by the Penrod Society, the fair supports artists, students, and organizations advancing the arts in Indiana.
Another notable event is the BUTTER Fine Art Fair, organized by GANGGANG, which has reached a significant milestone by continuing to grow the local and national arts ecosystem. The fair is committed to equity, offering 100% of artwork loan or sale proceeds directly to the artists.

The city’s performing arts scene is vibrant, with venues like the Hilbert Circle Theatre, home to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and the Indiana Theatre, housing the Indiana Repertory Theatre. The Mass Ave Cultural Arts District features the Old National Centre, the oldest stagehouse in Indianapolis, offering a variety of performances that cater to diverse audiences.
