The Indy Health District (IHD) is working to improve life expectancy in five north side neighborhoods of Indianapolis by addressing health disparities with a holistic approach. The initiative includes a market that provides fresh produce, free health screenings, and community resources. Residents in these neighborhoods currently face a life expectancy of just 69 years, significantly lower than that of nearby suburbs, where it exceeds 80 years. The market, part of IHD’s broader plan launched in October 2024, has already positively impacted the community—reaching over 1,450 residents through fresh food, providing more than 900 free blood pressure screenings, and distributing $16,000 in food vouchers in 2025.
