In a comprehensive effort to understand and address the health needs of its residents, the Marion County Public Health Department released the 2025 Community Health Assessment earlier this year. This extensive survey engaged over 4,500 residents and 200 community partners to pinpoint the most pressing health concerns in Indianapolis.
Key Health Concerns Identified
The assessment highlighted five primary health issues affecting the community:
Mental Health and Wellbeing
Approximately 25% of residents reported being diagnosed with depression, and 19% experienced symptoms of anxiety. Alarmingly, suicide rates have increased by 10% from 2018 to 2024, underscoring the need for enhanced mental health services and support systems.
Access to Health Care
Financial barriers significantly impact healthcare access. One in three residents reported difficulties in paying medical bills, and 20% avoided seeking medical care due to costs. Additionally, nearly 20% could not afford prescribed medications or had to reduce their dosage, highlighting the urgent need for affordable healthcare solutions.
Housing
Housing instability remains a critical issue, with 40% of 211 calls in 2023 related to housing concerns. Furthermore, 48.4% of renters spent more than 30% of their income on housing, indicating a substantial burden on many households.
Trauma and Injury Prevention
Gun violence has affected 25% of residents or their loved ones, and a similar percentage reported impacts from substance abuse. These statistics emphasize the necessity for comprehensive community safety and substance abuse prevention programs.
Infant Mortality
While specific statistics were not detailed in the assessment, infant mortality remains a significant concern, necessitating focused interventions to improve maternal and infant health outcomes.
Community Initiatives and Responses
In response to these challenges, various community-driven initiatives have been implemented:
Indy Health District Market
To combat health disparities, the Indy Health District established a market offering fresh produce, free health screenings, and community resources. This initiative has positively impacted over 1,450 residents, providing more than 900 free blood pressure screenings and distributing $16,000 in food vouchers in 2025. The program underscores the belief that “food is medicine,” promoting healthy eating as preventive care.
Streets to Home Indy
Addressing homelessness, the “Streets to Home Indy” program has successfully housed 114 individuals within six months. By offering supportive services such as healthcare, mental health support, and case management, the initiative aims to reduce homelessness and improve life expectancy in affected neighborhoods.
Vision Zero Initiative
To enhance street safety, Indianapolis launched the Vision Zero initiative, aiming to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2035. Despite ranking 72nd out of 100 metro areas for street safety, the city is committed to redesigning streets and improving safety measures for all road users.
Moving Forward
The 2025 Community Health Assessment serves as a crucial tool for guiding policy and resource allocation to address these pressing health concerns. Continued collaboration between residents, community organizations, and policymakers is essential to develop and implement effective solutions that promote the well-being of all Indianapolis residents.
